This data is used only for the secure and stable operation of the website and to defend against attacks (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The log files are deleted automatically on a rolling basis.

3. No external services

Fonts, images, the search and the island map are delivered from our own server. We do not use Google Fonts, Google Maps, analytics or advertising services. Map data comes from OpenStreetMap and is stored on our server.

4. Search

The search runs entirely in your browser. Your search terms are not sent to us or to third parties.

5. Island map and your location

If you use "Show my location" or directions, your browser asks for permission to use your location. The location is processed only on your device to show your position and calculate the route; it is not transmitted to us. If you save the map for use without internet, the map data is stored in your browser's storage on your device. Language choice and offline status are remembered in your browser. You can delete this data at any time in your browser settings.

6. Form for adding or correcting places

If you use the form to add or correct a place, we store the information you enter (details of the place and, if you provide them, your name and contact) on our server in order to check it and publish the details of the place. Your own name and contact details are not published; they are used only for questions about your entry. To protect the form against abuse we store a pseudonymised value derived from your IP address for one day. Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR; for visitors in Kenya, section 30 of the Data Protection Act 2019). You can withdraw your consent at any time by e-mail; we will then delete your personal details.

7. E-mail contact

If you contact us by e-mail, your details are used only to answer your request.

8. Photos

Photos of people are published only with their consent; photos of children only with the written consent of their parents and, for school pages, of the school.

10. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection (Art. 15–21 GDPR) and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). For visitors in Kenya, the Data Protection Act 2019 applies in addition.
